Ali Good leads the Non-Pro Derby competition after the first go

Ali Good leads Derby Non-Pro field

Riding Angel N Disguise 016, by Kit Kat Sugar, Ali Good of Ringling, Okla., scored 221 points to top the first go-round of NCHA Derby Non-Pro competition at the NCHA Metallic Cat Summer Cutting Spectacular Monday in Fort Worth. Kristen Galyean, Claremore, Okla., claimed the second-highest score of 220 points riding Coureygous, by Dual Rey, while Brad Wilson, Lone Grove, Okla., and Lance Cooper, tied with 219 points, showing Sumkinda Kitkat, by Kit Kat Sugar, and Wiskeemakemefriske, by Smooth As A Cat, respectively.

It took a score of 214 points or more to advance to the second go-round, where 53 riders will vie for a slot in the Non-Pro Finals on Wednesday, July 29. Cassie Cerny, Brazoria, Tex., with 218.5 points on Rose E, by Thomas E Hughes, topped the Non-Pro Intermediate field of 14 riders, who qualified for Wednesday’s Intermediate Finals.

Non-Pro Hall of Fame inductee Ali Good, with lifetime NCHA earnings of $395,625, won last year’s NCHA Derby Non-Pro Limited on Sabrina Boon LTE $72,607, by Boon A Little, and the 2017 NCHA Non-Pro Limited with Sneakish LTE $74,041, by Hottish.

Angel N Disguise 016 LTE $21,173 placed seventh in the NCHA Derby Open Finals under Chris Hanson eight days ago, and was second in the Derby Novice division, as well. The Kit Kat Sugar daughter was bred by Rusty Simpson, out of 2013 NCHA Futurity Open champion Dual Smart Kitty LTE $316,251.

Kristen Galyean, the Non-Pro Hall of Fame earner of $840,721, showed Coureygous LTE $106,836, to win last year’s NCHA Futurity Non-Pro championship. The Dual Rey daughter is out of 2005 NCHA Futurity Open champion Highbrow Supercat LTE $364,690, a leading producer of earners of more than $1.4 million.

Gaylean, who won the NCHA Derby Non-Pro championship in 2010 riding Harley LTE $203,574, by Spots Hot, also won the 2014 NCHA Super Stakes Non-Pro on ZR One LTE $75,178, by Petoboonsmal. So far this year, Galyean and Coureygous have won the Bonanza Non-Pro championship and placed third in The Non-Pro Plus Open at Ardmore. Wes Galyean has shown Coureygous as an Open finalist in three 2020 events, as well.
