Cat Killer, sired by Dual Smart Rey and bred by Don and Joetta Bell, Millsap, Tex., carried Don Bell to a 221-point win, in the NCHA Metallic Cat Summer Spectacular Amateur Intermediate Derby. Debra Mullins, Lancaster, Tex., riding Greater Expectations, by Third Cutting, and Natalie Rector, Rogersville, Mo., on Smart Delight CD, by High Brow CD, tied with 216 points for the reserve championship. Mike Townsend, Edmond, Okla., reserve champion of the Derby Amateur, earned 214.5 points, third-highest score in the 21-rider Intermediate Amateur Finals on Movin Too Suen, by Boon Too Suen.
Don Bell and Cat Killer won the championship of the 2020 Amateur Intermediate at The Non-Pro Plus Open in Ardmore, and placed third in the Amateur finals, as well. The Dual Smart Rey gelding also carried Bell to place fifth this past week in the NCHA Amateur Derby.
Bell, the NCHA earner of $106,987, won the 2012 NCHA Derby Non-Pro Limited on the High Brow Cat son Thundercat LTE $302,762, and was champion of the 2011 Cotton Stakes 3-Year-Old Non-Pro Futurity, as well as the West Texas Futurity Non-Pro Limited, riding Rosie Mate LTE $24,819, by Smart Mate.
Cat Killer is out of the Metallic Cat daughter Shesa Metallic Star LTE $69,052, purchased by the Bells at the 2011 NCHA Futurity Yearling Sale, and trained and shown by Wesley Galyean. Cat Killer and 4-year-old Once In A Blu Boon daughter Shesa Metallic Boon, with $5,422 in NRCHA competition, are Shesa Metallic Star’s first money earners. Second dam Amanda Stargun LTE $91,468, by Playgun, has produced 23 earners of $1,140,995, including the High Brow CD daughters Amandas CD LTE $283,571 and Sweet Lil Amanda LTE $266,914.
Debra Mullins, the NCHA earner of $55,446, earned her first major limited age championship showing Looney Lights LTE $33,346, by CD Lights, in the 2016 Amateur Classic 5/6 at The Non-Pro Plus Open. Earlier this year, Mullins showed her Third Cutting-sired gelding, Greater Expectations LTE $16,515, to win the Cattlemen’s Amateur championship and also earned money in four divisions of The Non-Pro Plus Open.
Greater Expectations LTE $16,515, bred by Robert Masterson, Guthrie, Tex., is out of the Mister Dual Pep daughter Miss Biscalena LTE $61,557, the dam of six money earners, including Little Guy Cat $66,737.
Natalie Rector, the NCHA earner of $62,674, was a 2019 NCHA Futurity Amateur Unlimited finalist riding Oscar Meyer Wendel, by High Brow CD. Earlier this spring, Rector placed eighth on Smart Delight CD in the Amateur Unlimited finals of The Non-Pro Plus Open. Bred by Grace Ranch, the High Brow CD gelding is out of Peptos Smart Delight LTE $26,946.
Mike Townsend, the NCHA earner of $108,038, bred Movin Too Suen LTE $15,876 out of the High Brow Cat daughter Catsa Movin LTE $103,046, also dam of Catsa U Later LTE $32,370, winner of the 2020 Abilene Spectacular Amateur Unlimited and a full sister to Movin Too Suen.
