The National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) is excited to announce that the NCHA’s Stallion Foal Program will add more than $800,000 in prize money at the 2020 Kit Kat Sugar NCHA Super Stakes. 

“The NCHA’s Stallion Foal Program is one of the richest breeding incentives that exist in the western equine industry,” Jay Winborn, NCHA Executive Director, said. “The program was developed specifically for the NCHA’s Super Stakes event and requires foals to be nominated to the program in order to compete.”

The Super Stakes is designed to showcase the breeders of the cutting industry. Each horse that competes at the show are offspring of subscribed stallions and are nominated to the program. Enrolled foals are invited to compete in their four-year-old year, and then again in their five and six-year-old years. 

On average, the program has added more than $700,000 each year in prize money to the Open, Non-Pro and Amateur divisions over the past three Super Stakes. In addition, the program has awarded, on average, more than $123,000 in prize money each year for the past three years, to the stallion owners and foal nominators. 

“As of February 25, the total number of foals nominated for the upcoming Super Stakes is 2,482, which is 2.4 percent higher than the total number of foals nominated for the 2019 Super Stakes,” Lance Bryson, NCHA Chief Financial Officer, said. “This number could continue to increase as additional subscriptions and nominations are received with 2020 Super Stakes entries.”

The 2020 Super Stakes will feature foals born in 2016 that are sired by one of the 148 stallions that have subscribed to the program. The subscribed stallions alone have contributed more than $350,000 to the total amount of prize money to be awarded. 

“The average number of stallions subscribed to the program has shown a slight decrease over the past couple of years; however, the number of foals has remained consistent and even increased in recent years, which contributes to significant prize monies at the Super Stakes,” Bryson said. 

According to the Stallion Foal Program rules, 15 percent of subscription funds and 15 percent of nomination funds are allocated to stallion owners and foal nominators of the program in prize money. This year more than $120,000 will be awarded in Stallion and Foal Awards. 

After Stallion and Foal Awards, the remainder of subscription and nomination funds will be allocated to the four-year-old and the five and six-year-old classes, according to the program rules and percentages agreed to by the NCHA’s Stallion Owners Committee.
