A score of 214 or higher was the magic number for 129 horses, following the last day of NCHA Derby Open first go-round competition, on Sunday. Saturday, the first day, saw four horses score 221 points or higher, including Million Dollarr Bill, shown by Alice Durkin for Anderson Cattle Company, who won the first go-round with 222 points. 

NCHA Derby Open competition, during the Metallic Cat NCHA Summer Spectacular,  continues on Monday, with the second go-round.

On Sunday, two more horses were added to the “221-points or more” roster, with four more garnering 220 points, or more. Haldou Do, shown by Jake Hanson for Hanson Revocable Trust, Weatherford, Tex., and Summer Time Fun, shown by James Payne for Ty Moore, Madill, Okla., topped Sunday’s competition with 221 points. 

Pepsi Boon, with Ryan Moore for Jerry and Luann Jeffries, Naylor, Mo., and The Dewd, ridden by Rodrigo Taboga for Beau and Ashley Galyean, Fort Worth, Tex., each scored 220.5 points, while Ms Baby Cakes, under Lloyd Cox for Barker Ranch Cutting Horses, Madill, Okla., and Toytallic, with Geoffrey Sheehan for Beechfork Ranch, Weatherford, Tex., tallied 220 points.

Haldou Do, sired by Halreycious and bred by Linda Holmes, placed third in the 2018 PCCHA Futurity and was a finalist in the Brazos Bash 3-Year-Old Futurity under Phil Hanson. This year, with Jake Hanson, Haldou Do LTE $53,777 placed fourth in the Breeders Invitational Open Limited Finals and eleventh in the NCHA Super Stakes Open Finals.

Jake Hanson, the NCHA earner of $56,914, showed Metallic M4 LTE $18,501 earlier this year to win the Breeders Invitational Open Limited. The Metallic Cat gelding also carried Hanson as a 2018 NCHA Futurity Open Semi-Finalist, and to place seventh in the NCHA Futurity Open Limited.

Hanson also qualified for Monday’s NCHA Derby second go-round with 216 points riding Katthryn LTE $15,954, sired by Kit Kat Sugar and owned by Jerry and Vicki Durant, Weatherford, Tex.

Summer Time Fun LTE $43,664, bred by Ty Moore, was a 2018 NCHA Futurity Semi-Finalist with James Payne, and earlier this year, Payne and the Metallic Cat daughter were finalists in the NCHA Super Stakes and the Breeders Invitational, and claimed the reserve championship in The Non-Pro Cutting. 

James Payne, the NCHA Hall of Fame earner of $3,170,909, had scored 219 on Saturday to also qualify for the Derby second go-round with Stylish Hailee LTE $81,273, sired by Halreycious and owned by Kathleen Moore, Madill, Okla. 

Pepsi Boon LTE $48,602, by Once In A Blu Boon, was an NCHA Futurity Open and Open Limited finalist with Ryan Moore, and has earned money in three other major events in 2019, including as third-placed finalist in the NCHA Super Stakes Open Limited. Ryan Moore, the NCHA earner of $269,600, also scored 218 points in the Derby go-round on Im Not Blu, by Once In A Blu Boon LTE $25,997, for Shadow B Ranch, Harrison, Ark.

The Dewd LTE $36,073, by Metallic Cat, placed third with Rodrigo Taboga in the NCHA Futurity Open Limited Finals and was a Futurity Open Semi-Finalist. In 2019, owner and trainer Beau Galyean has ridden the gelding to place in the Ike Hamilton Futurity, as well as the Arbuckle Mountain Futurity.

Rodrigo Taboga, the NCHA earner of $69,956, also qualified for the second go-round with 216.5 points on Rocky Mountain Blues, sired by Smooth As A Cat and owned by Selena Orchard Barbosa, Paso Robles, Calif., and also qualified Shes Fire And Ice, by Spots Hot, owned by Filipe Barbosa.

Ms Baby Cakes LTE $53,450, by Metallic Cat, placed 14th in the NCHA Futurity under Lloyd Cox, and was also a 2019 finalist in the Ike Hamilton Futurity and the Abilene Spectacular. Cox also was a high-scoring go-round contender on Saturday with Slooow Ride LTE $92,129, sired by Metallic Cat and owned by Pat and Lisa Taylor, Pilot Point, Tex.

Toytallic LTE $60,195, by Metallic Cat, has been shown by Geoffrey Sheehan to place in four major 2019 events. Sheehan also qualified with 221 points on Saturday riding Ten Blade LTE $37,581, sired by High Brow Cat and owned by Beechfork Ranch. In addition, Sheehan qualified for the second go-round with 217 points on Beechfork Ranch’s The Cat Doctress, by High Brow Cat.
