Slooow Ride, shown by Lloyd Cox for Pat and Lisa Taylor, Pilot Point, Tex., won the 2019 Breeders Invitational Derby championship and $53,309 on Saturday, the final day of competition, with 225 points in a tie-breaking workoff with NCHA Futurity champion Crey Zee, shown by Tatum Rice for Kevin and Sydney Knight, Weatherford, Tex. The two horses tied with 224 points in the 24-horse finals; Crey Zee scored 222 points to Slooow Ride’s 225 in the workoff.
The Breeders Invitational championship marked the first major win for Slooow Ride, a Metallic Cat son and half-brother to 2004 NCHA Futurity Open champion and 2019 Top 10 sire Spots Hot.
Bred by Alvin Fults, Slooow Ride LTE $91,688 is out of the Shorty Lena daughter Sweet Shorty Lena, dam of earners of over $1.3 million. Earlier this year, Slooow Ride was an Open finalist in the Ike Hamilton Derby and the Cattlemen’s Derby under Adan Banuelos, and also placed with Pat Taylor in the Arbuckle Mountain Amateur Unlimited Finals.
The Breeders Invitational counted as Crey Zee’s second reserve championship in 2019. The NCHA Futurity champion, sired by Dual Rey, won the 2019 Ike Hamilton Derby and was also reserve in the Cattlemen’s Derby with Rice. Bred by Kevin and Sydney Knight, Crey Zee LTE $272,992 is out of the High Brow Cat daughter Eazee E LTE $211,145, a three-quarter sister, by Smooth As A Cat, to Smooth Asa Zee $616,978.
Sugrspiznevrthingniz LTE $156,114, owned by Jim Vangilder, scored 222 points under Matt Gaines to claim third place in the Breeders Invitational Derby. The Kit Kat Sugar daughter has also claimed three major 2019 Open reserve championships: the NCHA Super Stakes; the Arbuckle Mountain Derby; and the Bonanza Derby.
