Bama Jelly, ridden by Austin Shepard for owner and breeder Madalyn Colgrove, scored 220.5 points to top the field on Monday, as the first go-round of Open competition concluded at the 2018 North Texas Chevy Dealers NCHA Futurity, presented by Great American Insurance. Horses with scores of 213.5 points and above advanced to the second go-round which begins on Tuesday, November 20.

Monday’s second-highest score of 219 was posted by One Time Legend, shown by Ty Brown for Larry Hall Cutting Horses. Would You If and Jon Burgess, riding for Crown Ranch, posted 218.5 points, the day’s third-highest score.

Bama Jelly is by Bamacat out of Wood She Be Neat, by Nitas Wood. The sorrel stallion is the first performer out of Wood She Be Neat ($27,600), who carried Colgrove as Amateur Unlimited reserve champion of the 2014 Cotton Stakes, as well as in the finals of six other limited age events, including the NCHA Super Stakes Classic Non-Pro.

One Time Legend, a gelding sired by One Time Pepto, was bred by Cowan Select Horses out of HR Playin Legend, by Little Lenas Legend. HR Playin Legend ($83,884) placed in the Open finals of the 2004 PCCHA Futurity and in the 2005 NCHA Derby with James Payne. She is also the dam of One Time Legend’s full siblings, Legendary Pepto ($54,452) and One Playin Pepto ($40,725).

Wood You If, by Woody Be Tuff, is out of the High Brow Cat daughter CR Smart Lil Kitty, whose first performers are 2014 half-sibling CR Smart Boots ($222,684), by Boon Too Suen, and full sibling CR Tuff Lovin Cat ($21,899). CR Smart Lil Kitty is a half-sister to Thomas E Hughes ($393,045) and full sister to Lethal Weapon I ($144,398. Her dam, Smart Letha, has produced earners of $840,942.

DMAC Doggfather, by Kit Kat Sugar, shown for David and Stacie McDavid by Clint Allen, was one of four horses to score 218 points on Monday. Bred by Winston Hansma, DMAC Doggfather is out the Dual Pep daughter Graciela Dual, dam of eight earners of $624,311, including CD Graceful Dual ($184,241), Dual Lights ($167,146) and DMAC Snoop Dog ($122,212).

Hotty Mc Hotty, by Hottish, was shown by Morgan Cromer for Eric Freitas, owner of Reycan In The Cash, shown by Greg Wright to also score 218 points. Reycan In The Cash, sired by Dual Rey and bred by Cinder Lakes Ranch, is a full brother to Cancan Reyvolution ($176,682) and Kitty Can Dual ($108,297). Hotty Mc Hotty, bred by Freitas, is out of CD Cinco De Mayo ($62,524).

The Doctress, sired by High Brow Cat and bred by Rhodes River Ranch, is owned by Beechfork Ranch and shown by Geoffrey Sheehan. The sorrel mare is is out of The Doctress Orders ($150,752), Non-Pro reserve champion of the 2009 NCHA Futurity. Sheehan also scored a 221 earlier in the week on Toytallic.
