2018 Lucas Oil NCHA Super Stakes – April 17, 2018 – Fort Worth, Tex.
Julie Hansma, Fort Worth, Tex., scored 218. 5 points on homebred Tommy Shelby, by High Brow Cat, to top the first day of Super Stakes Non-Pro competition. Reigning NCHA Futurity Non-Pro champion Chad Bushaw; Cody Hedlund; and Kyle Manion tied with 217.5 points, the day’s second-highest score.
Hansma, the NCHA earner of $1,448,135, showed Tommy Shelby as a 2017 NCHA Futurity Non-Pro semi-finalist, while her daughter, McCall, showed the colt to place third in the NCHA Futurity Non-Pro Limited. One month later, Julie showed Tommy Shelby as Non-Pro reserve champion and Non-Pro Novice winner in the Abilene Spectacular.
Tommy Shelby is out of Little Pepto Zack, by Zack T Wood, a half-sister to Little Pepto Cat $518,047.

Chad Bushaw, Weatherford, Tex., won the 2017 NCHA Futurity Non-Pro championship aboard his Super Stakes mount Bittersweet LTE $61,162, by Metallic Cat. Bushaw, who ranks third among all-time top NCHA Non-Pro money earners, also won the 2001 NCHA Futurity Non-Pro aboard Jerryoes LTE $252,790; the 2008 NCHA Super Stakes Non-Pro with Cats Ruby LTE $143,998; and the 2012 NCHA Derby on Bet On A Cat LTE, $381,154, who is out of Bet On Houston, dam of three of the 2018 Super Stakes Open top-scoring horses going into thew Semi-Finals. Bittersweet is out of Miss Sea Rey, by Dual Rey, dam of seven NCHA earners of $191,033.
Cody Hedlund, the NCHA earner of $826,194, from Lipan, Tex, showed Teles One Time. Although Hedlund and the One Time Royalty son have not as yet hit the boards in a limited age event, they share an impressive history. Teles One Time is out of Teles Lies LTE $93,206, shown in open competition by Cody’s father Rock Hedlund. Teles Lies, in turn, is the dam of Meteles Cat LTE $433,565, by Metallic Cat, shown by Cody as 2014 Super Stakes Non-Pro reserve champion.
Meteles Cat is also the dam of Teles Bout This Cat LTE $230,047, by WR This Cats Smart, shown by Cody as the 2011 Super Stakes Non-Pro champion.
Kyle Manion, Aubrey, Tex., showed Smooth As Mimi LTE $32,054, by Smooth As A Cat, who he also showed as a finalist (7th) in the NCHA Futurity Non-Pro and the 2018 Abilene Spectacular Non-Pro (6th). Manion, the NCHA earner of $1,660,729, was the 2012 NCHA Super Stakes Non-Pro reserve champion and Non-Pro Novice winner aboard Chet Smooth LTE $137,807, by Smooth As A Cat.
