Congratulations Bernie Kirkland
The NCHA and the Amateur Committee would like to congratulate Bernie Kirkland on being selected for the 2017 Mary Kingsbury Amateur Sportsmanship Award. Bernie became a member of the National Cutting Horse Association in 1981. Since that time, he has served the Association and the members in many different capacities, competitor, owner, area director and standing committee’s. During his time of service, he dedicated himself specifically to the Amateur Committee from 2005-2011. You can find Bernie at all the major NCHA events, he knows the owners and the trainers and may have even played a roll in matching them up. Bernie’s business card for many years stated, “purveyor of fine horses”, that is an understatement when referencing Bernie. And if anyone is keeping score with sale attendance, Bernie has that covered as well. He loves good horses and might have even delivered one to you. Bernie has spent a lot of time hauling horses or being copilot to friends as a way to be a part of the process. He loves cutting and the people who cut. When he wasn’t supporting or promoting cutting in the name of the NCHA he worked as a manager/foreman for a number of large ranches over the years including Atwood’s and Bartlett’s Ranches. We are grateful that Bernie Kirkland chose the Cutting Horse Industry as his passion, he has made us better just by being a part of it.
Mary Kingsbury Amateur Sportsmanship Award is awarded to an amateur who is dedicated to the sport of cutting, in good standing and exhibits good sportsmanship, fairness and a high moral character and has made extraordinary contributions to the sport of cutting, the horse and the association through their contribution of time, effort and interest in the NCHA and its basic endeavors.
