Twenty horses with scores of 212.5 or higher from Thursday’s Lucas Oil NCHA Super Stakes Non-Pro Semi-Finals earned a draw for the Non-Pro Finals on Saturday, April 15. Jody McGlothlin, Perrin, Tex., and Somethingtobelivein, by Hydrive Cat, scored 220 points to top the field, while Chad Bushaw and Mary Ann Rapp, both from Weatherford, Tex., tied with the second-highest score of 217.5 points on Ara Mae Rey and Molokai, respectively. Dean Holden, Marietta, Okla., riding Samson Made of Metal, ranked third with 216.5 points.

Jody McGlothlin and Somethingtobelivein LTE $40,892 first gained the spotlight at the 2016 NCHA Futurity, when they won the Non-Pro Limited championship with 222 points. Their next stop was the 2017 Augusta Futurity, where they claimed the non-pro reserve championship and Jody’s husband, trainer Brett McGlothlin, placed with Somethingtobelivein in the Open Finals. At the Cattlemen’s Derby in March, Somethingtobelivein carried Jody and Brett to place fifth in the non-pro and open divisions.

Last Sunday, Brett and the Hydrive Cat daughter placed twelfth in the Super Stakes Open Limited, and Jody also qualified, with her first go-round score of 220.5 points, for Friday’s Super Stakes Non-Pro Limited Finals.

While the NCHA Futurity Non-Pro Limited win and the Augusta Futurity reserve account for Jody’s largest individual checks, her 2006 NCHA Derby Amateur win on Platinum Bob, when she was 18, ranks a close third. Jody is the NCHA earner of $125,749.

Chad Bushaw, owner of Crown Ranch, Weatherford, Tex., is the winner of all three NCHA Triple Crown non-pro events, including the 2012 NCHA Derby Non-Pro with Bet On A Cat LTE $363,058; the 2008 NCHA Super Stakes Non-Pro on Cats Ruby LTE $143,998; and the 2001 NCHA Futurity Non-Pro with Jerryoes LTE $252,780, whose half-brother, Johnny English LTE $18,620, bred by Crown Ranch, won the 2017 Super Stakes Open Limited last weekend with Rowdy Larson.

Bushaw, the NCHA Non-Pro Hall of Fame earner of $3,220,316, showed Ara Mae Rey, by Dual Rey, as a semi-finalist in the 2016 NCHA Futurity Non-Pro, and qualified for the Super Stakes Non-Pro Semi-Finals with go-round scores of 215 and 213.5 points.

Mary Ann Rapp, a leading earner of $4,465,237 and an NCHA Non-Pro Hall of Fame Rider, won the 2010 NCHA Super Stakes Non-Pro aboard ARC Catmando LTE $98,715 and the 2003 NCHA Super Stakes Classic Non-Pro with Amanda Stargun LTE $91,468, as well as the 2002 NCHA Futurity Non-Pro on Little Janey Lena $191,979. Rapp also placed in the 2017 NCHA Super Stakes Classic, on April 4, with Miss Kitty Reycine LTE $31,742.

Molokai LTE $5,741, Rapp’s mount for Saturday’s Non-Pro Finals, carried her to the 2016 NCHA Futurity Non-Pro Semi-Finals. The Metallic Cat daughter is out of Hickorys Tornado Rio LTE $71,376, producer of earners of $182,665.

Dean Holden, Marietta, Okla., showed Samson Made Of Metal LTE $21,981, by Metallic Cat, as a 2016 NCHA Futurity Non-Pro Semi-Finalist, while his wife, Charra, showed the gelding to place seventh in the NCHA Futurity Amateur.  Charra also showed Samson Made Of Metal as a finalist last week in the NCHA Super Stakes Amateur and UnLimited Amateur divisions.

Dean Holden, the NCHA Non-Pro Hall of Fame earner of $864,610, was reserve champion of the 2013 NCHA Super Stakes Non Pro and the 2015 NCHA Super Stakes Classic Non Pro on Playin With A Spoon LTE $140,462; Holden also won the 2010 NCHA Super Stakes Non-Pro Novice division with Willys The Boss Lte $133,458.
