The IKE Open Classic

Ireydescent and Banuelos claimed the IKE Open Classic title with a 227.

Ireydescent, owned by Brumbaugh Ranches, Aledo, Tex., claimed her first major win in January 2020, as champion of the Abilene Spectacular Open Futurity under Adan Banuelos. By the end of that year, the Dual Rey daughter had increased her earnings to $101,644. And on Tuesday, February 2, 2021, Ireydescent added another Open championship title and $13,000 to her tally, with a 227-point win under Banuelos in the Ike 5/6 Classic, in West Monroe, La.

Also on Tuesday, the 6-year-old Bama Cat son Bama Jelly LTE $207,524, owned and bred by Madalyn Colgrove, Boligee, Ala., scored 224 points to earn $11,000 and the reserve championship under Austin Shepard. Third place went to 5-year-old Once In A Blu Boon daughter Miss Blu Boon LTE $50,748, shown by Lloyd Cox to earn 222.5, as well as $9,039, for owner Kathleen Moore, Madill, Okla.

Lloyd Cox also took fourth place with 222 points on the Kit Kat Sugar son Exs N Ohhs LTE $147,861, owned by Barker Ranch, Madill, Okla.; while Beau Galyean, showing for Fults Ranch, Amarillo, Tex., came in fifth with 221 points on the Metallic Cat son Warlock $127,615, and also placed first in the Classic Open Gelding division.

Beau Galyean won last year’s Ike Open Classic, as well as the Open Gelding division, riding his wife Ashley’s horse Buonvino LTE $107,454, by Metallic Cat.

The 51-horse go-round was narrowed, with scores of 219.5 or higher, to a finals field of 14. Badboonarising LTE $318,279, owned by Plantation Farms, Denham Springs, La., and shown by Adan Banuelos, won the go-round with 223.5 points. Bama Jelly LTE $207,524 and Shepard also tied two other entries with 222, the second-highest score of the go-round, while Lloyd Cox claimed third and fourth with 221.5 and 220.5, respectively, on Slooow Ride LTE $167,257, owned by Pat and Lisa Taylor, Pilot Point, Tex, and on his own horse, Ms Baby Cakes LTE $161,602. Shepard also qualified, on the bubble, riding Kinky Bootz, owned by Glenn and Debbie Drake, Napa, Calif.

Ireydescent is out of the High Brow Cat daughter Desires Katrina LTE $128,812, dam of three earners of $145,196, and a full sister to Thundercat LTE $302,762, among 31 NCHA earners of $1,596,419 (including six with $100,000 or more) out of the Freckles Playboy daughter Desire Some Freckles LTE $188,990.

 The Ike Derby and Classic continues through Sunday, February 7.
